Day 4Introduction Day 6

The Galapagos Islands - February 2010
Day 5 - Isabela & Fernandina Islands

Isabela Island, the largest in the Galapagos Archipelago, is made up of five volcanoes that are still active. The last eruption was in May 2008. The beach, typical of most of the beaches on the islands, is black, rocky sand, but the water was just perfect for a swim after our nature hike to the interior.

While we were eating lunch, back on the ship, we caught sight of Killer Whales - Orca - and several pods of Dolphins (not the Miami kind.)

Fernandina Island is the youngest and most western of the islands. It's also the most volcanically active with the last eruption in May 2005. Along with thousands of Sea Iguanas, the island boasts a huge colony of flightless Cormorants.

The landscape, a mix of ancient lava flows, collapsed calderas, and a myriad of salt bushes, is alive with the indigenous animal population.
